Reinforced brake drum from Scootopia for Vespa PX, T5, LML 2T, Cosa
Brake drum from Scootopia with massively reinforced steel core and significantly larger aluminum struts. In addition, the brake drum has replaceable wheel studs.
Suitable for all engines with Ø30mm oil seal.
Also suitable for nearly all largeframe engines with 10 inch tires. Therefore usable e.g. for Vespa Sprint, Rally, TS, GT, GTR etc., if the shaft seal ring is also exchanged (see below).
The reinforcements predestined the Scootopia brake drum for all powerful engines. Their high wheel torque can overtax conventional brake drums. The Scootopia offers significantly more safety here.
Tightening torque wheel nuts (M8): 20-22Nm
Tightening torque nut brake drum (M16): 90-110Nm
Background knowledge:
With the introduction of the Vespa GL around 1962 a new type of brake drum for the rear wheel shaft was established, which is still used today in almost the same design. With the exception of the GS160/SS180 and COSA models, this type of drum was used in all Vespa scooters with horizontal cylinder (Vespa Largeframe) from 1962 on.
1962-1984: Drum with Ø27mm oil seal face, castle nut secured with split pin. Tightening torque: 75-90NM
1984-1988: Drum with Ø30mm oil seal face, hexagon nut secured with cage and split pin. Tightening torque: 90-110NM
1988-present: Drum with Ø31.5mm unground race for felt ring, hex nut secured with cage and split pin (the actual oil seal is located in the gearbox here). Tightening torque: 90-110NM
The steadily increasing flange diameter (from Ø27 to Ø31,5mm) allows a much more stable brake drum flange. The models with only Ø27mm tend to expand quickly if the tightening torque was too low. A splayed brake drum flange can be recognized by a loosening rear wheel again and again, despite correctly tightened rear wheel nut. In this case, only a timely replacement of the brake drum will help, otherwise the teeth of the main shaft will be affected and must also be replaced. For stability reasons it is always recommended to change to a drum with 30mm flange diameter.
UPGRADE old to new (27mm => 30mm): The more stable drum of the PX Lusso models from 1984-1988 can also be used on the older models with Ø27mm drum, provided that the oil seal of the Lusso models with Ø30mm and the washer of the models from 1984 onwards are also used there.
DOWNGRADE new to old (31,5mm & 30mm): The newest type of brake drum (1988-today) has no more ground tread and is therefore unsuitable for the combination with an oil seal. From the factory on the models from 1988 onwards an internal oil seal and external felt ring was used. Here, too, the Lusso drum from 1984-1988 can be used and converted to a conventional oil seal (TIP: If the internal oil seal is omitted here, then please be sure to close the drip hole in the housing.
