Lambretta Junior
In 1964 Innocenti introduced a whole new scooter family with the Junior range. The simple and lightweight construction of the scooters should allow for lower prices and therefore appeal to new groups of customers.
The construction bears some similarities to Piaggio scooters by using a monocoque chassis. Also the access to the carburettor under a small plastic toolbox under the seat is similar to the smallframe Vespas. The engine however is placed centrally in the chassis and constructed along the lines of the larger LI series, even if the cylinder sits upright instead of lying horizontally. Depending on the model, a dual seat, a single seat or two single seats were fitted.
The engine is covered by side panels, which had external handles on most models. Most rubber parts were coloured grey, apart from the kickstart rubber and the stand feet, which came in black colour.
J50
There are four different versions of the J 50. The first series featured 50cc capacity
and a three-speed gearbox, which resulted in the enormous power output of 1,47 hp and a breathtaking top speed of 40 kph. A dual seat came as standard, but speedo and steering lock were omitted for financial reasons. The second version received a restyled bodywork with narrower legshields and a newly designed seat base. In 1966 the so-called “DeLuxe” version hit the shops, bearing polished aluminium flashes on the side panels, a new single seat together with a carrier plate on the back and clipped side panel hooks instead of handles. Also, 3.00-10 wheels superseded the original 2.75 9 sized wheels of the previous versions. Finally, the “Special” was introduced in 1970, with a floorboard mat instead of ribs, a sporty single seat and a spoiler-like grabrail on the back.
