6Volt or 12 Volt?
Like the factory ELO ignition, the one offered here has the curious feature of 6 volts for the main lights but 12 volts for the turn signals. Piaggio has used this technique on other vehicles (e.g. Vespa PK50S), presumably for a faster response time of the flasher relay at low speed (idle).
Voltage regulator?
The often read information that a voltage regulator for the alternator is necessary is not correct. It is a so-called self-regulating system. This means that a suitable resistance is given by the load of the consumers (lamps). If all consumers are connected as factory provided (yellow cable 6V/15W driving light bulb, 6V/4W tail light) no voltage regulator is needed. However, this only applies to motors that do not rotate significantly higher than a standard motor. Tuned motors, which usually reach significantly higher final speeds, can produce a significantly higher voltage at the same load of the consumers, which can burn out the bulbs.
12Volt lighting on 6Volt coils?
A coil basically always produces power (watts), not a precisely defined voltage (volts). The volts are always dependent on the attached load (consumer) as well as the induced voltage (speed of the pole wheel). The load is defined by the illuminant. A 12Volt illuminant has a lower internal resistance than one with 6Volt. Therefore, 12Volt lamps can be operated without problems on a system that is designed for 6Volt. However, the danger of an overvoltage exists even faster which would lead to the failure of the illuminant. The brightness depends on the used wattage of front AND rear light bulb. Here, if necessary, try something which combination brings the best light output but does not tend to burn out at high speed. Due to the possible achievable high speeds, however, one faces the problem that correspondingly strong bulbs that do not burn out at low speeds rather glow than shine.
Solution
Who wants to be on the safe side uses from the outset a voltage regulator, such as BGM6690 (for 12Volt). As a result you have, despite a supposedly only 6Volt strong system, a nice bright light which does not burn out. Who also wants to connect a brake light can use the brown cable. Here, however, Piaggio has additionally switched a resistor in parallel to the bulb to avoid an overvoltage.
TIP: Professionals can also connect all light coils in series (solder on the ignition base plate) and then have a very high light output which must be regulated by a voltage regulator. With this, however, conversions that have a high current consumption (electric water pump, large headlight, etc.) can be done without any problems.
