Corteco shaft seals are among the best on the market. We therefore recommend them without reservation for all engines and power ratings. Sets which are marked with -CORTECO- contain only shaft seals from Corteco.
They are available in different materials:
CORTECO BLUE (NBR)
The blue Corteco shaft seals are made of NBR rubber (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber). Compared to the standard material (usually black), this has a higher wear resistance. Temperature resistant up to approx. 100°C.
CORTECO BROWN (FKM/FPM)
The brown shaft sealing rings are made of FKM/FPM (fluoro rubber). They are highly resistant to abrasion with low friction and very high resistance to ageing. They also have a temperature resistance of up to 200°C. They are therefore mainly used in the crankcase area. Our first choice for all performance-enhanced engines.
The shaft seal sets for the Vespa PX, Cosa and T5 engines differ fundamentally in two things:
GUMMI VS METALL
This refers to the type of large shaft seal on the clutch side used on PX motors. This has always been made of sheet metal completely covered with rubber. With the introduction of the Lusso models, a shaft seal without an outer rubber coating was also used, the so-called metal shaft seal.
In general, it can be said that motors that have another groove (not quite as deep) in addition to the groove for the bearing circlip should use the rubber shaft seal type. The motor housings which are smooth on the seal seat use the metal type.
br /> SPECIAL TO THE BROWN METAL WEDI
The brown Corteco metal shaft seals have a stiffening shaft in the rubber profile on the back. They can therefore be subjected to the highest compression load. These were originally only used in the 200ccm engines. Some of the brown oil seals are higher than necessary. If they are inserted flush into the motor housing, they can grind on the bearing inner ring. If they are not inserted flush, the crankshaft can grind on the shaft seal collar. Both should be avoided to prevent the oil seal from loosening. In practice, we have had the best experience with grinding these WeDis by a few tenths of a millimetre in height, as well as gluing them in with Loctite 603 (jointing shaft-hub).
Assembly NOTES
The side with the radial spring always looks into the crankhouse/engine interior.
The rubberised shaft seals can usually be pressed into the engine casing by hand. The large metal shaft seals can best be driven in with a thick flat steel (8-10mm) in the width of the wedi (approx. Ø62mm). To do this, lay the motor housing flat on a table with the flat clutch cover side (the long crossbar looks over the edge of the table). Center the sealing ring and then drive it into the housing with a single strong blow on the sheet metal. Ideally, of course, as always with this type of work, make sure there is a sufficient temperature difference between the components (motor housing warm, Wedi cold).
NOTE
Piaggio unfortunately has different shaft seal manufacturers and types in their sets under the same article number. If you want to be absolutely sure, use the Corteco sets from the beginning.
