The cylinder base gaskets of the Piaggio / Gilera 4-stroke Leader and Quasar engines from 125cc upwards are available ex works in different thicknesses. According to the workshop manual, this is to adjust the squeeze size, i.e. the distance between piston and combustion chamber, which is very important for engine durability. If this dimension is too small, the engine may start to ring and detonations in the combustion chamber can quickly destroy the piston and cylinder as well as the crankshaft bearings due to a too high compression ratio.
