PROBLEMS OF THE OLD ORIGINAL FORKS
The forks of the old Vespa large frame models have antiquated damping and suspension kinematics. Due to the construction, the chassis will fail quickly when braking hard ('goes on block'). If this is counteracted with a harder spring/damping, the handling quickly becomes uncomfortable. Likewise, the braking force and stability are no longer sufficient for the performance and thus achievable speed of today's modern cylinders.

The PK XL2 forks use a modern system with combined spring/shock absorber in one unit. This is in direct extension of the steering axle, which significantly reduces the typical pitching movements during braking. The chassis can also be designed in a sporty way without reducing the driving comfort too much.
The biggest plus point is the optional use of a disc brake on the PX models.
The braking power as well as the stability of the brake can be significantly improved and makes it possible to have power ratings well above 12kW in such an old frame.
NECESSARY CHANGES
The BGM PRO fork is modified ready for installation:
- Newly set steering stop
- Ready milled slotted hole for the reception of the steering lock
- Reworking of the upper steering tube end for the reception of the handlebars
For an unproblematic conversion we offer a fender made of GFK, which was designed to fit this fork. Alternatively, a sheet metal fender can be adapted, which is usually quite costly.
BRAKE
It is possible to use the drum brake of a donor vehicle (Vespa PK XL/XL2 or also PX from 1984). Due to the clearly better brake performance, however, the simultaneous conversion to a disc brake is much more popular. Here we offer complete sets from Grimeca as well as original Piaggio spare parts for the Vespa PX models (from 1998 with disc brake ex works). Both will be accepted by the TÜV (German Technical Inspection Authority) if the conversion is done professionally, but an individual acceptance is inevitable. It is best to involve the appropriate inspector before the conversion.
FAHRWERK
The fork allows the use of ultra-modern gas pressure supported shock absorbers. An ideal supplement are the racing proven BGM PRO COMPETITION shock absorbers. These offer a very wide adjustment range and can be adjusted comfortably soft or sporty taut in spring preload as well as in rebound and compression several times. For touring riders, the BGM PRO SPORT shock absorber is an alternative. It is considerably cheaper, can be adjusted to the rider/vehicle weight as easily as quickly and also offers the possibility of a height change (threaded suspension). With the conversion to a semi-hydraulic Grimeca disc brake, the handlebars can also remain unaffected. Only the conversion to a fully hydraulic brake system changes the appearance of the handlebars. The necessary brake pump can now be attached to the handlebars without any modifications. Appropriate brackets are available. Steel braided brake lines with TÜV and modular connections can be pulled through the fork like the original brake cable. These are also available as stock items.
FAZIT
For active Vespapilots who like to drive faster with their old iron, a real improvement. Both from a safety and driving dynamics point of view.
The conversion is done quite quickly from a technical point of view thanks to the conversion fork. The TÜV acceptance is done via individual acceptance, a prior consultation with the inspector is recommended. Afterwards you have a technically up-to-date vehicle which scores with a surprisingly good road performance and looks damn good at the same time.
